Lettering
I love hand lettering.
I think that a unique typeface is the fastest way to make a statement memorable, an illustration elevated, and a message bolder.
As with everything I illustrate, it begins in my sketchbook. From there it is refined and vectorized in adobe Illustrator.
Wading in Waist-High Water by Fleet Foxes
This project was one I did as a theoretical book cover redesign for the lyrical anthology book Wading in Waist-High Water that frontman Robin Pecknold had published. I felt the cover text being a fairly basic serif didn't give nearly enough of a presence to the book.
I decided that a bulky serif text with a good mixture of solidity, openness, thick, and thin would help to give the book some more intensity while maintaining an inviting, naturalistic air.
Avoid Pain
This was a personal project in which I wanted to challenge myself to develop a font with some irony to it. I knew that the phrase I wanted to pair with this text was "Avoid pain, avoid it all," which is evocative word salad meant to convey some sense of longing and finality. I decided that a font that had sharp, pointed edges but curved joinery between them would help convey that feeling, while having the letters cling to one another would give an ironic edge to the idea of avoidance.
